As a first time mom, the amount of lists I went through comparing what I would need and what I would not was countless. And truth be told, you won’t actually know what works best for you until your baby is here. But the one intention I kept was not to over-do it or go over the top with things. With that I wanted to share 5 things I don’t regret buying for those first few weeks Saga was here.

Snuggle Me Organic Infant Lounger (they’re currently doing a 30% warehouse sale but only for a day or two longer depending on when you read this) — they’re so teeny tiny when they first come out that this came in handy for the first couple months. She most often used it inserted into her bassinet and although it’s not recommended for them to sleep in, she would often nap supervised in here. I will say, after about 2 months we haven’t used it since and our dog Vlad has turned it into his own personal dog bed…
Baby Bum Balm — I started using this with Saga at just a week old to prevent and treat diaper rash and let me tell you, it is *the* best. Please gift it to yourself and every mother you know. To this day, we’ve gone through multiple jars and I use it in her little moisture areas like her neck, pits, on face whenever she scratches herself with those razor sharp claws of hers, etc. It works incredibly fast and the ingredients are the best of the best of the best.
Baby Bouncer — I’ve heard incredible things about the Baby Bjorn Bouncer but I opted for the budget-friendly route with this bouncer instead and it has served us so well! Saga was probably closer to a month old before we started using it but it would allow me time for daily showers or just hands-free time where she wouldn’t scream if I set her down.
Baby Wraps & Carriers — Saga is a baby who loves to be held and wants to be close to me so these were a must-have for our household. I did the wraps and slings for those first newborn months and now we use the carrier. Ergo Baby & Moby Wrap are my favorites when it comes to brands & keep in mind you can find a lot of these bigger names gently used on sites like Poshmark or FB Marketplace.
Rechargeable Night Light — I didn’t think a little egg shaped nightlife would make life easier but it turns out this thing is awesome for those nighttime changes without waking baby up. It’s dimmable and easily portable so you can bring it with you to the hospital, keep it at your nightstand, or on baby’s changing table. Tap tap.
What makes life easier for us may not be the thing that makes life easier for you.
For example…pacifiers were a total waste for us because Saga has never taken to any of them. Her crib is another one that I’m so glad we snagged off the marketplace and didn’t spend heaps of money on because she sleeps best close to me. It’s basically just a big storage area for her toys and clothes. She doesn’t particularly love sleep swaddles and sacks so purchasing a bunch of those would’ve been wasteful as well. Her stroller? I used a few times for walks when she was a few weeks old but she prefers to be worn. Cloth diapers? Although I loved the idea, I hardly ended up using them because it felt like so much more work.
I’m content with our less is more approach and purchasing things that support my baby’s individual needs over what’s trending on social media. xx
With Gratitude,
Caitlin
